Explanations of Astrology

The signs do not change what a planet represents or how it functions. Rather, they act as filters, and help to show the motivation of the planet.

The twelve signs of the zodiac each have an element and a modality associated with them.

The four elements, Fire, Earth, Air, Water, describe the nature of the sign.

The three modalities, Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable, describe how that nature will be expressed by a planet in the sign.

The Elements

The Fire signs are,  Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.  The element of Fire represents life, will, and spirit. Fire is outgoing, energizing and transforming. Fire is the most self motivated of the elements, and Fire signs tend to be the most action oriented. Fire signs are the most comfortable with emotions such as anger, joy, enthusiasm and humour, and have difficulty with more subtle and receptive emotions. Fire signs are concerned with identity.

The Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. The element of earth represents substance and physical form. Earth does not move; it stays in one place. Earth is practical, substantial and material, and is concerned with matter and our need to deal with it. Earth is passive and receptive: it must be acted on and formed by external energies. Earth is the most stable of the elements. Earth signs are concerned with the physical, the material and with issues of worth and value.

The Air signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.  The element of Air represents the mental and social functions. While Fire rises, air moves horizontally, connecting things that it touches. Air adapts, transforms, reforms and changes, and expresses itself by engaging in social interaction. Air desires perspective rather than intensity, and dislikes strong emotions. Air seeks to cover as much ground as possible and to get an idea or concept of the whole.

The Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.  The element of water represents the emotional, spiritual and soul functions. Water is maternal and feminine, and it sinks and penetrates. Water is non-linear, non-rational and non-discriminating. Water only understands feelings and emotions, and may have difficulty communicating with words. Just as water will continue to flow unless closely contained, water signs tend to have difficulty with boundaries.

The Modalities

The Cardinal signs Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn correspond to the beginning of the seasons Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Cardinal signs are therefore strong initiators - they begin things, they start the ball rolling. Whatever the element, when a planet is in a cardinal sign, it is motivated to start something. Cardinal signs, and planets in Cardinal signs are always concerned with the question of identity.

When the Sun enters the Fixed signs, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius the seasons are well under way. Fixed signs tend to stabilize and give form to what the Cardinal signs started. (Cardinal signs are great at starting things, but generally have trouble with seeing anything to completion.) Fixed signs are about putting down roots and settling in. Planets in fixed signs will gain strength and determination, but they will also lose quite a lot of flexibility. Fixed signs don't generally like to change unless the change was their idea. Fixed signs, and planets in fixed signs are concerned with the question of self-worth.

The Mutable signs, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces correspond to the times when one season is giving way to another. Mutable signs are the most flexible, the most changeable. Mutable signs are concerned with finishing up what has been started, by the Cardinal signs, and stabilized by the Fixed signs, to get ready for the next cycle. Planets in Mutable signs will become more adaptable, but may also lose some direction. Mutable signs, and planets in mutable signs are concerned with the question of completion.

07Libra.gif (639 bytes) Libra is a Cardinal Air sign. As the seventh stage in the evolutionary process of the zodiac, Libra is the first sign that projects itself over the horizon, and the first sign in our development where we can recognize another individual on a one-to-one basis. Being Cardinal and initiating, and Air and social, Libra is motivated to initiate one-to-one relationships. Keywords for Libra are "I  BALANCE" and Libra planets are also motivated by harmony and balance. Libra is also ruled by the planet Venus.

Traditional Libra Traits

On the dark side....

* Romantic & charming
* Easygoing & sociable
* Idealistic & peaceable
* Indecisive & changeable
* Gullible & easily influenced
* Flirtatious & self-indulgent

z_libra.gif (4371 bytes) Libra is the only inanimate sign of the zodiac, all the others representing either humans or animals. Many modern astrologers regard it as the most desirable of zodiacal types because it represents the zenith of the year, the high point of the seasons, when the harvest of all the hard work of the spring is reaped. There is a mellowness and sense of relaxation in the air as mankind enjoys the last of the summer sun and the fruits of his toil. Librans too are among the most civilized of the twelve zodiacal characters and are often good looking. They have elegance, charm and good taste, are naturally kind, very gentle, and lovers of beauty, harmony (both in music and social living) and the pleasures that these bring.

They have good critical faculty and are able to stand back and look impartially at matters which call for an impartial judgment to be made on them. But they do not tolerate argument from anyone who challenges their opinions, for once they have reached a conclusion, its truth seems to them self-evident; and among their faults is an impatience of criticism and a greed for approval. But their characters are on the whole balanced, diplomatic and even tempered.

Librans are sensitive to the needs of others and have the gift, sometimes to an almost psychic extent, of understanding the emotional needs of their companions and meeting them with their own innate optimism - they are the kind of people of whom it is said, "They always make you feel better for having been with them." They are very social human beings. They loathe cruelty, viciousness and vulgarity and detest conflict between people, so they do their best to cooperate and compromise with everyone around them, and their ideal for their own circle and for society as a whole is unity.

Their cast of mind is artistic rather than intellectual, though they are usually too moderate and well balanced to be avant garde in any artistic endeavour. They have good perception and observation and their critical ability, with which they are able to view their own efforts as well as those of others, gives their work integrity.

In their personal relationships they show understanding of the other person's point of view, trying to resolve any differences by compromise, and are often willing to allow claims against themselves to be settled to their own disadvantage rather than spoil a relationship. They like the opposite sex to the extent of promiscuity sometimes, and may indulge in romanticism bordering on sentimentality. Their marriages, however, stand a good chance of success because they are frequently the union of "true minds". The Libran's continuing kindness toward his or her partner mollifies any hurt the latter may feel if the two have had a tiff. Nor can the Libran's spouse often complain that he or she is not understood, for the Libran is usually the most empathetic of all the zodiacal types and the most ready to tolerate the beloved's failings.

The negative Libran character may show frivolity, flirtatiousness and shallowness. It can be changeable and indecisive, impatient of routine, colourlessly conventional and timid, easygoing to the point of inertia, seldom angry when circumstances demand a show of annoyance at least; and yet Librans can shock everyone around them with sudden storms of rage. Their love of pleasure may lead them into extravagance; Libran men can degenerate into reckless gamblers, and Libran women extravagant, jealous and careless about money sometimes squander their wealth and talents in their over enthusiasm for causes which they espouse. Both sexes can become great gossipers. A characteristic of the type is an insatiable curiosity that tempts them to enquire into every social scandal in their circle.

In their work the description "lazy Libra" which is sometimes given is actually more alliterative than true. Librans can be surprisingly energetic, though it is true that they dislike coarse, dirty work. Although some are modestly content, others are extremely ambitious. With their dislike of extremes they make good diplomats but perhaps poor party politicians, for they are moderate in their opinions and able to see other points of view. They can succeed as administrators, lawyers (they have a strong sense of justice, which cynics might say could handicap them in a legal career), antique dealers, civil servants and bankers, for they are trustworthy in handling other people's money. Some Librans are gifted in fashion designing or in devising new cosmetics; others may find success as artists, composers, critics, writers, interior decorators, welfare workers or valuers, and they have an ability in the management of all sorts of public entertainment. Some work philanthropically for humanity with great self-disciple and significant results. Libran financiers sometimes make good speculators, for they have the optimism and ability to recover from financial crashes.

Physically the Libran has a well-proportioned, fundamentally strong physique of between average height and tall, a round skull and face. The hair is often fair, smooth, and fine rather than curly; the complexion is good and the eyes often blue and very expressive.

Libra governs the lumbar region, lower back and kidneys. Its subjects must beware of weaknesses in the back, and lumbago, and they are susceptible to troubles in the kidneys and bladder, especially gravel and stone. They need to avoid overindulgence in food and especially drink, for the latter can particularly harm the kidneys.

Essentially, you're a nice person and tend to be a bit more cultured and "better" than those around you. Usually, you're also diplomatic enough to keep your superiority to yourself. The more that you become fair-minded, impartial and unprejudiced, the happier you become. You have the potential for much social intercourse and favourable public contact

All things being equal, you prefer civil conversation. You usually do not find reason to raise your voice or to use crude language at inappropriate times. Embarrassment can be an issue for you. You like to ask for advice, but do not like to be told what to do. You can get a cushy job in a swanky environment. Tourmaline and opal symbolize hope and are good for Libra.

The totem for Libra is a scale symbolizing the need for balance and the need to carefully weigh out choices. Libra is a Cardinal Air sign represented by the falling leaves. Just as a state or province has it's governor, each sign of the zodiac is said to have it's ruler. Libra is ruled by Venus.

Because you have the sun in Libra, you also have planet earth in Aries. You can ground yourself and get closer to the earth by taking some practical steps to stabilize your own personality. Eat more earthy foods such as grains, fresh fruits and vegetables. Add more earthy tones such as green and brown to your wardrobe. Enter an orienteering contest. Go back to your original hair colour.

TIP: To really thrive, you need to be part of a loving, committed "partnership."

 CARDINAL.gif (867 bytes)

t_cardnl.gif (4020 bytes)   Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn are cardinal signs, the ones that begin each season.

You like to start things and take the initiative. You have to act, but do not like to be told what to do. You are restless, energetic, driving, outgoing, opportunistic and ambitious. You are full of primal energy and do not cope well with direct and constant supervision. You're suited for self-employment, or the kind of work where you are in charge. Probably, you're more busy than bored.

You've a strong outward orientation to career, love, home and family. Deal directly with surroundings and with others.

TIP: Learn to delegate in order to become a better leader.

e_air.gif (3022 bytes)  Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are the air signs. When you have lots of air sign energy your mind is your most valuable asset; you could be an intellectual. The world of ideas is important to you. Intellectual companionship, seminars, books, magazines, films, and educational cassettes interest you. Feeding your mind is just as important as feeding your body. School can be the place for you.

People fascinate you and you tend to regard them in a detached manner. Consequently you enjoy teamwork and social interactions more than most folk. Sentimentality does not figure highly in most of your relationships.

You can excel in any field that requires negotiation skills. Sales and writing may be avenues of pursuit. You have an affinity for abstract reasoning, codes of law and ethics - you're very good at perceiving, comparing and communicating. You are much more objective than most people, and probably more liberal in your thinking.

Your weakness is not foolishness so much as it is indecisiveness. Too much thinking can result in lost opportunities. There is a time to get out of your head and make a decision. If you find that you can't sleep because your mind is racing, get up and work with your ideas. Get ideas down on paper, onto index cards, into a word processing machine or up and out into the airwaves, the Internet and the world wide web.

Consider getting a brain machine and taking "smart drugs." Learn speed reading and typing. To avoid over stimulation, cut back on the use of artificial sweeteners and sugar. To the same end, you might take a mineral supplement and kelp tablets.

TIP: In the words of Robert Anton Wilson, "You need to learn more about everything, including how to learn more."

04Venus.gif (724 bytes)

p_venus.gif (2779 bytes)  Astrologically speaking, the planet Venus is the force of affinity. Venus represents a good part of what you attract, cherish, enjoy and are receptive to. Venus describes much of what makes your life worth living: love, civilized sex, seduction and creativity. Venus is also an indicator for many of the qualities you look for in a mate and your sense of femininity. More than a symbol of your values, Venus represents beauty, devotion to pleasure, appreciation of art and romantic longings. Venus rules such things as skin, hair & kidneys.

The planet Venus is swathed in layers of sulphuric acid clouds. In the illustration, her hair looks like swirling formations of clouds. If we were to be able to get beneath the layers of the clouds, the surface would look very much like the older face. It is volcanic, hard and cracked.

The sunrise and sunset suggested in the two corners are there because Venus is referred to as the "Morning Star" and the "Evening Star." The stars are in her eyes for the same reason. The young face seems relevant to the more conventional images of Venus. In fact, women have a different kind of power when they are younger than when they are older. Both are pertinent to the personality of Venus astrologically. Femininity has many aspects to it.

This "goddess of beauty and lady of battle" was an historical personage known both as Ishtar and Indira. While Venus first and foremost loves her pleasures, she also knows that it is sometimes necessary to prepare to go to war to secure them. To gain deep rapport with Venus, study her ways in one of the glorious cities named in her honour such as Vienna and Venice.
